Kicking Off the Climbing Season
After a long winter where all our climbing sessions were indoors at the climbing gym, the arrival of spring brought the perfect opportunity to head back into nature. Rock climbing is one of our favorite activities as part of our Banff Tours, and it plays a key role in preparing for our summer camp in Canada. While indoor climbing keeps us in shape and sharp during the cold months, nothing compares to climbing outside surrounded by mountains and friends. Our first outdoor adventure took us to a new climbing zone in Kananaskis called Birdwatchers.
Exploring a New Crag: Birdwatchers in Kananaskis
The Challenge of Finding the Climbing Spot
Unlike mountain biking or hiking trails, rock climbing areas are not always clearly marked. You often rely on approximate coordinates, vague directions, or tips from local climbers. We had some basic instructions and general coordinates, but still struggled a bit to find the Birdwatchers crag.
Once we found the right spot, we parked the vehicles and started the hike. The trail was well-defined with a 200-meter ascent over about one kilometer. Some of us handled it better than others, but we all made it in high spirits and ready to climb.
Gear Up and Climb: Facing the Rock
Next challenge: locating the routes. After a few minutes of searching, we found two routes side by side—one rated 5.9 and the other 5.10. Gonzalo and I chose the 5.9, while Shawn and Aldo went for the 5.10. After checking our gear—harnesses, ropes, carabiners, anchors—we were ready to go. I belayed Gonzalo as he climbed, and then we switched roles. Outdoor climbing offers a whole different vibe: the feel of real rock, the wind, the views—it’s a full-body and full-soul experience.

More Than a Climb: Nature, Friendship, and Growth
What we love most at Dare and Explore is sharing these moments with good friends. Climbing builds more than strength—it builds confidence, character, and deepens our connection with nature. Trips like this are the soul of our Banff Tours and also a glimpse into what our summer camp in Canada is all about. They’re the kinds of adventures that stick with you and shape who you become.
