An Unforgettable Adventure for Teens at Our Summer Camp
Hello, I’m Ernesto Lozano, founder and director of Dare and Explore. After more than 15 years exploring the Canadian Rockies, where I’ve made my home, I’ve had the privilege of sharing some of the most exciting and authentic experiences this region has to offer with young adventurers. One of the absolute highlights at our summer camp is, without a doubt, the rafting trip down the Bow River.
This isn’t just about paddling down a river — it’s about drifting along with the current, surrounded by the towering mountains of the Rockies. It’s the perfect mix of adrenaline, nature, and bonding that makes this journey a lasting memory for every teen who joins us on this adventure.
From Banff to Canmore: 24 Kilometers of Pure Excitement
Our adventure begins at one of Banff’s most iconic spots: the stunning Bow Falls. Here we inflate the rafts, secure life jackets, and go over a safety briefing. The morning air in Banff carries a unique freshness that only the mountains can provide. You can see the mix of excitement and nerves on everyone’s faces, just before the raft touches the water and the journey begins.
The Bow River offers a welcoming, yet personality-filled experience. Over the course of 24 kilometers, the current flows gently, making it easy to enjoy every paddle stroke, while occasional rapids awaken everyone’s adventurous spirit. Whether it’s their first time rafting or not, teens find themselves completely immersed in the fun and natural beauty of the Rockies.
Adventures for Teens That Make a Lasting Impact
Rafting the Bow River is much more than just a water activity; it’s a lesson in teamwork, trust, and connection with nature. At Dare and Explore, we strongly believe that teens not only need to explore the world around them but also to discover themselves. There’s no better place to do that than on the crystal-clear waters surrounded by the towering peaks of the Rockies.
As we move along the route, the views become nothing short of spectacular: snow-capped peaks, dense pine forests, and if we’re lucky, maybe even an elk or a deer grazing quietly along the riverbank. This is the kind of landscape that inspires and transforms, the kind you carry in your heart for years to come.
A Break to Recharge and Share Moments
Roughly halfway through the journey, we pull ashore at a quiet riverside spot to take a break, stretch our legs, and enjoy a delicious picnic-style lunch. This moment always becomes one of the day’s highlights — not just because of the food, but for the chance to relax, share stories from the first half of the trip, and soak in the scenery.
It’s during this break that friendships grow stronger, laughter comes easily, and cameras capture memories that will last long after the trip is over. It’s also the perfect time for teens to reflect on the privilege of being surrounded by such untouched wilderness.
Canmore: The Perfect Ending to an Epic Journey
After lunch, we return to the river and paddle our way toward Canmore, the place we call home and the base for our summer camp. The arrival is always a moment of triumph: tired but fulfilled faces, the satisfaction of a challenge overcome, and the joy of having experienced a true Rockies adventure.
Once we reach Canmore, we deflate the rafts, pack up the gear, and head back to our summer camp ready for the next experience. Because at Dare and Explore, every day offers a new opportunity to explore, learn, and live the Rockies to the fullest.
Banff Tours: More Than Tourism, Life-Changing Experiences
Rafting the Bow River is just one of the many adventures that make up our Canadian Rockies summer camp. For many teens, this is a life-changing experience. Not only do they make new friends, but they also develop confidence, communication skills, and a genuine love for nature — all of which stay with them long after summer ends.
If you’re searching for adventures for teens in Canada, few things can compare to paddling the waters of one of Banff’s most iconic rivers, surrounded by majestic mountain peaks and breathtaking scenery.
