The Call of the Rockies
For over 15 years, I’ve explored the most spectacular corners of the Canadian Rockies. As the founder of Dare and Explore, I've guided countless adventurers through transformative experiences in nature. This time, I’d like to share a special journey we took with a group from Mexico and Spain—our unforgettable hike through Johnston Canyon to the Ink Pots.
Departure from Canmore: The Beginning of the Adventure
We left early from Canmore, with backpacks ready, hiking shoes on, and plenty of excitement. Within minutes of hitting the road, the towering silhouettes of the Rockies emerged on the horizon, building anticipation. After about an hour’s drive, we reached Johnston Canyon, energized and eager to begin.
First Segment: Walking Along the River to the Lower Falls
The first part of the trail is 1.2 km and very accessible, attracting many visitors. Suspended catwalks take you alongside Johnston Creek, offering stunning views of the canyon walls and the rushing water below. When we reached the Lower Falls, we paused to admire the beauty before continuing.
Second Segment: Towards the Upper Falls
The second section, about 1.5 km with a steeper incline, sees fewer hikers. As we moved deeper into the canyon, the river's sounds, the forest breeze, and birdsong surrounded us. The Upper Falls were spectacular—powerful and misty, offering another perfect photo and rest stop.
The Real Challenge: 3 km to the Ink Pots
The final 3 km of the trail led us into a quieter forested area, filled with birds, squirrels, and rustling trees. Unlike the busier first two segments, this part of the trail offered solitude and deep connection with nature. As we neared our destination, the river reappeared and the forest opened up.
Lunch, Rest and Reflection
The Ink Pots—seven cold mineral springs with mesmerizing green and blue hues—greeted us in all their glory. These colorful pools are formed by underground springs with different flow rates and mineral contents. We sat down to enjoy lunch, took photos, and simply soaked in the view.
The Return: Gratitude with Every Step
The return journey was easier, mostly downhill, and filled with laughter and reflection. We had completed 12.6 km with a 563 m elevation gain, and the sense of accomplishment was evident in everyone’s smiles.
