After more than 15 years exploring every corner of the Canadian Rockies, there are places that still take my breath away as if it were the first time. One of them is undoubtedly Tent Ridge, a hidden gem in the heart of Kananaskis Country, near the border with British Columbia. This trail not only offers 360-degree views that make you feel on top of the world, but also an authentic experience of connection with Canadian wilderness. In this blog, I want to share why this trail is one of my all-time favorites and why it could be your next unforgettable tour in Banff.
Where is Tent Ridge?
Tent Ridge is located in Kananaskis, a mountainous region of Alberta that many consider Banff's less touristy sister — but equally spectacular. The trailhead is about 1 hour and 45 minutes from Calgary or around an hour from Canmore, through scenic roads that already set the mood for adventure. Kananaskis is known for its tranquility, abundant wildlife, and less crowded trails, making it the perfect destination for true mountain lovers.
Trail Stats and Technical Features
Distance: 10 km loop
Elevation gain: 800 meters
Duration: 4.5 to 6 hours
Difficulty: Intermediate to advanced (mainly due to the ridge section)
Recommended season: Late June to mid-October
The Adventure Begins
The hike starts in a lush valley, surrounded by dense forest and the sound of the wind whispering through the trees. We begin on a well-marked trail at the base of the mountains. Soon, the view opens up and straight ahead we see our goal: the crest of Tent Ridge. From there, the trail starts to ascend steadily, and within a few minutes we’re already rewarded with incredible views of the surrounding peaks.
First Views and Weather Station
The climb is steady but not overly demanding. In less than two hours, we reach the first summit, where a small weather station awaits. This is a perfect spot to rest, hydrate, and get ready for the more technical part of the hike. At this point, the first gasps of amazement begin — to the left, snow-capped peaks; to the right, turquoise lakes and a sea of glacial valleys.
The Ridge Section
From the weather station begins the most challenging and thrilling part of the hike: walking along the ridge. The trail becomes narrower and steeper, but this is also where the landscape transforms entirely. It feels like walking along the spine of a sleeping dragon, with steep drops on both sides and an endless horizon.
This section requires focus and good footwear, but the reward is worth every step. On clear days, you can see British Columbia’s peaks to the west and Spray Lakes Valley to the east.

The Summit Moment
Upon reaching the highest point of Tent Ridge, all you can say is: wow. There are no words that truly capture the feeling of being on top of the world. This is where we always pause for a photo and video session, and of course, to enjoy our lunch with the best view imaginable. We take our time to soak it all in: the majesty of nature, the vastness of the mountains, and the joy of sharing the moment with friends and fellow adventurers.
The Descent
The descent isn’t particularly technical, but it’s steep and steady, requiring caution. It’s best done with minimal stops but without rushing, keeping a comfortable pace. As we make our way down, we continue to enjoy breathtaking views, and often spot traces of local wildlife: bear tracks, deer, or even mountain goats. When we reach the end of the trail, the most common comment I hear is: "That was incredible!"
What to Bring on the Hike
If you’re planning to do this hike on your own or with us, here’s what I recommend packing:
Sunscreen (the sun hits hard along the ridge)
Water (at least 2 liters per person)
A full lunch and some snacks
Insect and bear repellent
Hiking poles
Hat or cap
Layered clothing and a lightweight waterproof or windbreaker jacket
Hiking shoes with good grip
It’s also essential to check trail conditions and the weather forecast before heading out, as the ridge can become dangerous with rain or strong winds.
Why Tent Ridge Should Be Your Next Tour in Banff
While Tent Ridge is not located inside Banff National Park, its proximity makes it a fantastic option for those seeking a tour in Banff that’s less touristy and deeply authentic. This hike offers everything a great adventure should have: physical effort, unparalleled natural beauty, and a sense of achievement that lingers long after.
At Dare and Explore, we organize guided hikes to Tent Ridge during the summer season, ensuring you have all the necessary gear, transportation from Canmore or Calgary, and an experienced guide who will accompany you and document every moment of your adventure.

Final Thoughts
Every time I return to Tent Ridge, I discover something new — a different light, a curious cloud, a flower I hadn’t noticed before. It’s a place that reminds me why I love what I do, and why it’s worth inviting others to dare and explore. If you’re looking for a tour in Banff that goes beyond the usual tourist stops, Tent Ridge could be your gateway into the purest essence of the Canadian Rockies.
See you at the summit!
