An Early Start Toward Adventure
As the founder and director of Dare and Explore, and someone who’s been exploring the Canadian Rockies for over 15 years, there’s nothing that excites me more than the arrival of a new season and the chance to revisit the places that continue to take our breath away — even after so many years. This blog is a personal account of our first Moraine Lake tour of the year.
We began our day as we always do — early, with energy and high spirits. Our group met in the morning, ready for a day full of cycling, mountain views, and connection with nature. As we left the city behind, just 30 minutes into the drive, we were already surrounded by the majestic Rocky Mountains. The season had just begun, and the peaks were still snow-covered. The contrast between the fresh green of the trees and the brilliant white of the snow created a magical landscape that reminded me why I love this place so much.
Arrival at Lake Louise — Let the Tour Begin
We arrived at Lake Louise, our starting point for the bike tour to Moraine Lake. The air was crisp and cool, perfect for a long ride. We began by unloading the bikes by the river. Everyone put on their helmets and backpacks, adjusted their gear, and got ready for the journey ahead.
The trail began on a packed dirt path, wide enough to ride comfortably and enjoy the surroundings. Not long after starting, we hit our first real climb — and it was a tough one. The first hill is always the most demanding, gaining elevation in a short distance. But with effort and determination, we reached the second bridge, where we crossed a powerful little stream. There, we took a well-deserved break to hydrate, take photos, and capture some video to document the moment.
The Climb Toward Moraine Lake
We continued until we reached the paved road that leads directly to Moraine Lake. From this point, it's 11 kilometers — 9 kilometers of climbing, and 2 kilometers downhill toward the lake. This is the most physically demanding section of the Moraine Lake tour, but also the most rewarding.
We completed this stretch in under an hour, stopping here and there to catch our breath, enjoy the views, and encourage each other. The road starts surrounded by dense forest and creeks, but as we climbed, the landscape opened up to reveal a spectacular view of the surrounding peaks.
The feeling of slowly gaining elevation, riding through untouched wilderness, hearing nothing but the wind in the trees and the occasional bird song — this is what the Moraine Lake tour is all about. That sense of effort meeting beauty. Every drop of sweat is paid back tenfold by the view.
Arrival at Moraine Lake — The Valley of the Ten Peaks
As we approached our destination, we entered the famous Valley of the Ten Peaks — a stunning natural amphitheater surrounded by towering, snow-capped mountains. And right in the center, like a turquoise gem, lay Moraine Lake.
We parked our bikes and walked up a small rocky hill to get the best view. No matter how many times I visit, this place always makes me pause. The color of the water, the reflection of the peaks, and the overwhelming silence of the valley make it one of the most special places in the Canadian Rockies.
We stayed a while — eating lunch, chatting, and of course, taking plenty of photos. The group shared stories and laughter. For many, it was their first time here. For me, it was a return to a place that never loses its magic.
The Return Ride — A Rewarding Descent
After enjoying the lake and the valley, it was time to head back. We packed up, adjusted our helmets and backpacks once more, and got ready for the return trip.
The first 2 kilometers are uphill again, but after that, we enjoyed the long, beautiful descent. Riding down through the cool mountain air, past the streams and trees, with the sound of wind in your ears — this is the second reward of the day.
It’s a moment of freedom, speed, and joy. The fatigue from the climb fades away as gravity helps you glide back through the stunning landscape. This part of the Moraine Lake tour is often a favorite, especially for those who pushed themselves hard on the way up.

Closing Thoughts from the Trail
As a father, husband, and nature lover, I’ve always believed in the importance of experiences over things. The moments we remember, the people we share them with, and the sense of awe that only wild places can bring — that’s what truly matters.
If you’re reading this and wondering if this is the right tour for you, I encourage you to take the leap. The Moraine Lake tour is suitable for intermediate cyclists, and we make sure everyone feels comfortable and supported throughout the journey.
Let us show you the Moraine Lake I fell in love with over a decade ago — not from a bus window or a crowded parking lot, but from the seat of a bike, with the wind in your face and mountains all around.
Adventure is waiting — come ride with us.
