Biking the Legacy Trail: An Epic Summer Camp Adventure

Summer camp with MTB, rafting, and rock climbing in Alberta

Summers in the Canadian Rockies aren’t measured in days—they’re measured in adventure. And one of the most anticipated experiences in our summer camp is the bike ride along the Legacy Trail, a scenic route that connects the towns of Canmore and Banff inside Canada’s most visited national park.

This journey has become a true highlight of the camp. Not only because we ride 40 kilometers (round trip) along a paved trail surrounded by majestic mountains, but because it’s a shared experience that connects young riders to nature, builds friendships, and creates memories that last long after summer ends.

Early Rides, Big Views

We start the day early. As the sun peeks over the mountain tops, our campers are already gearing up: checking bikes, tightening helmets, and stretching out with excitement. Some have biked the trail before, others are new to it—but everyone shares the same energy and enthusiasm for what’s ahead.

The Legacy Trail stretches approximately 20 km from Canmore to Banff (40 km round trip), running parallel to the Trans-Canada Highway. Though the path is mostly flat, it features about 100 meters of elevation on the way there—a gentle incline that’s hardly noticeable, especially when the scenery is this breathtaking.

As we ride, we’re treated to panoramic views of Mount Rundle and Cascade Mountain. These towering giants remind us just how lucky we are to be here. Along the way, it’s common to spot deer quietly grazing near the path, adding a touch of wilderness magic to our adventure.

Discovering Banff Village

After about two hours of relaxed riding and photo stops, we arrive in Banff, a vibrant mountain town in the heart of the national park. We park our bikes, stretch our legs, and set out on foot to explore the charm and history of this special place.

Banff is full of character: quaint shops, cozy cafés, bustling streets, and beautiful green spaces. Campers wander in groups, grabbing ice cream, browsing souvenirs, or simply enjoying the atmosphere.

We visit local landmarks like the Banff town hall, take photos by the flower-filled gardens, and walk to the Bow Falls, just a short stroll from the center. One of the favorite stops is the historic Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel—often called “the castle in the Rockies.” Built in 1888, it’s a stunning example of Canadian architecture and a window into Banff’s tourism legacy.

The Ride Back: Downhill and Smiles

After a fun-filled afternoon, it’s time to head back. And here’s the best part: remember that 100 meters of elevation we climbed on the way in? Now it’s working in our favor. The ride back is smooth, fast, and feels effortless.

There’s a sense of confidence and joy in the group. They know the trail now, they’ve conquered the ride, and they’ve bonded over the experience. The return is full of laughter, singing, and spontaneous races among friends.

As we roll back into Canmore, there’s a feeling of accomplishment. Legs are tired, yes—but hearts are full. What started as a bike ride turned into a journey of discovery.

More Than Just a Ride

What makes the Legacy Trail special isn’t just the scenery or the smooth pavement. It’s what happens during the ride—the connections, the personal victories, the immersion in nature, and the chance to do something new.

At Dare and Explore, we believe summer camp should be more than just time off. It should be a transformative experience that helps young people grow, build resilience, and find joy in movement and nature. The Legacy Trail delivers all of that, and more.

Because in the end, whether you ride 40 kilometers or just enjoy the ride—what truly matters is the adventure shared.
